The Orioles 2012 season was one to remember, filled with one-run victories, unlikely heroes and contributions from over 50 different players, with 32 making their Orioles debut. It all began at spring training in Sarasota where many of those players first donned an Orioles uniform. Manager Buck Showalter recently expressed his appreciation of the Sarasota community and the Orioles staff who live and work in Sarasota County year-round.
"Our facilities at Ed Smith Stadium and the Buck O'Neil Baseball Complex are a vital part of our success as an organization and are second to none in Major League Baseball," Showalter said. "Although spring training is what Sarasota is known for, the facilities are a key component of our baseball operations year-round - through extended spring training, Gulf Coast League and Fall Instructional League, as well as rehabilitation for injured players.
We have been embraced by residents, businesses and civic institutions in the community from the moment Mr. Angelos made a long-term commitment to Sarasota, and we view Sarasota as a key link in the chain of our baseball operations success. Our 2012 season got off to a great start at these world-class facilities last February and we look forward to continuing to improve in 2013."
The Orioles full squad of players will return to Sarasota in early February to begin their journey to what we hope is an even more successful season in 2013.
