Young Adult Leadership Award

The Colorado Rockies Young Adult Leadership Award seeks to recognize young adults who demonstrate strong leadership skills and a commitment to make their community a better place.

Eligible students: Colorado residents, high school juniors or seniors and college students in their first, second or third year of study, students with a 2.8 GPA or higher (teachers will verify this requirement), and students who have completed a minimum of 5 hours of community service per semester during the last calendar year.

Students: You will be writing an essay about the importance of giving back to the community and the role you play in making your community a better place. The essay must be factual, including personal experiences.

  1. Turn your typed essay into your teacher by March 28, 2014. Submission must include your full name and essay should include a list of community service hours, including organization name and approximate dates of when the hours were completed.
  2. If your school chooses your essay as one of their top three, it will be sent to the Colorado Rockies and judged along with the best three entries from all other participating schools.
  3. A "Winning Essay" will be chosen from all "top three" entries submitted; the winner will be contacted by a Rockies representative the week of April 21, 2014. The winner will be recognized on the field in a pregame ceremony on Saturday, May 3. The winner's family will receive VIP tickets for that game. The winner will receive a $500 grant toward an agreed upon educational non-profit, and they will be featured in a future issue of Rockies Magazine! GOOD LUCK!

Contest guidelines for school teachers and/or administrators: (1) Collect all essay entries by March 28, 2014. (2) Also by March 28 email Marisol Villagomez at with the total number of participating students from your school. (3) Please review all essays and submit your "top three" to the Rockies by no later than Wednesday, April 9, 2014 (entries must be typed and emailed as an attachment to Please note that it is up to the teacher to verify that the student meets each of the requirements. Colorado resident, student is a high school junior or senior or in their 1st - 3rd year of college, and ensure the student holds a GPA of 2.8 or higher, and has completed a minimum of 5 hours of community service per semester during the last calendar year.
