How the Red Sox were built

To say general manager Theo Epstein's fingerprints are on this year's postseason roster would be an understatement. Only nine of Boston's 25 players were here before Epstein was named the youngest GM in Major League history on Nov. 25, 2002.

After the Red Sox were eliminated from playoffs last season, Epstein began rebuilding his club. He orchestrated one of the offseason's biggest deals, acquiring right-hander Curt Schilling from the Diamondbacks on Nov. 28, 2003, in exchange for four pitchers. Six days later, Epstein named A's bench coach Terry Francona the franchise's 44th skipper.

A glaring weakness in the 2003 campaign was addressed on Dec. 13, 2003, when Epstein signed closer Keith Foulke to a three-year contract. Epstein then sent shockwaves through Red Sox Nation on July 31, trading fan favorite Nomar Garciaparra as part of a four-team deal that netted Expos shortstop Orlando Cabrera and Twins first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz.

Before the non-waiver trading deadline was over, Epstein added speedy outfielder Dave Roberts from the Dodgers as insurance for a then-injured Trot Nixon.
