Millar: Two at-bats changed game
10/07/2004 4:43 AM ET
Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar has been a regular contributor to the past two seasons. He is providing daily commentary throughout Boston's postseason run. Millar breaks down his team's 8-3 victory in Game 2 over the Angels.

We wanted to come out of here with two wins. Once you win the first one, you have to put your foot on their throat and try to win the second one. I think that team over there is not going to give up and we know that.

We wanted Pedro Martinez to do what he came out and did tonight. He stepped up and threw seven innings and gave us a chance to win the baseball game and we did.

It was a great game. You had Bartolo Colon and Martinez going, and, offensively both teams were doing the best they could off those starting pitchers.

I'll tell you right now, we got down, 3-1, and Jason Varitek hit a big two-run homer to get us back in it, and Manny Ramirez had a great at-bat off Francisco Rodriguez to get that run in. And those were the two at-bats in the game that really made the difference.

I had good at-bats off Colon all night. He's a tough pitcher. He wasn't giving a lot. I was able to just get a single up the middle and it gave Varitek an opportunity to do what he did.

It's amazing people were doubting Pedro coming into this game. For anyone to doubt Pedro Martinez, they're not very knowledgeable about baseball. There's no one that should ever doubt a three-time Cy Young Award winner or doubt his heart or his desire. These guys went out there and showed those doubters how good he really is.

We can't take Anaheim lightly just because we have them 2-0. We know what it was like to be down 2-0 last year and come back. They're not going to quit. We know that feeling. We have to go out there for Game 3 and put our foots on their throat and get this thing over with. We don't want to give them any sign of hope.

Right now, we're swinging the bats well, we're playing good defense, and our starting pitching has been phenomenal. We have to go out there and get a 'W' on Friday.

Fenway should be great on Friday. It's going to be nothing less than Sox Nation. They've been behind us all year and this should be an incredible game.
