Team record
The Twins finished the 2004 campaign with a 92-70 record and won the AL Central for a third consecutive season, the first back-to-back-to-back division titles in franchise history. After going 47-40 in the first half of the season, the Twins went 45-30 after the All-Star break, including 19-12 from September to the end of the regular season. It was the third consecutive season in which the Twins won 90 or more games.

Record vs. Yankees
The Twins went 2-4 against the Yankees this season, breaking a skid of two straight seasons in which they went winless against New York. The Twins won the first two games at the Metrodome, 8-2 and 7-2, but then lost the next four, including a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium in late September.

Record vs. playoff teams
The Twins went 10-11 against teams in this year's AL postseason field. Although the Twins had losing records against the Yankees (2-4) and Angels (4-5), they were 4-2 against the Wild Card-winning Red Sox. The wins over Boston, however, were close. Three of the four were by just one run, the other by two. The Twins did not face any of the four National League playoff teams in Interleague Play this season.

The Twins were third in the league in hitting (.266), ninth in on-base percentage (.332), tenth in runs (780), ninth in slugging percentage (.431) and sixth in home runs (191). The Twins struck out 982 times, ending a streak of four consecutive seasons with more than 1,000 strikeouts. The Twins had 513 walks, just one more than 2003.

The Twins had four players with at least 70 RBIs -- Torii Hunter (81), Jacque Jones (81), Lew Ford (72) and Corey Koskie (71) -- and nine with double-digits in home runs this season -- Koskie (25), Jones (24), Hunter (23), Justin Morneau (19), Ford (15), Michael Cuddyer (12), Shannon Stewart (11), Henry Blanco (10) and Luis Rivas (10). Hunter posted his fourth career season with at least 20 homers.

Pitching stats
The Twins finished in first place in the AL, with a 4.03 ERA. Minnesota pitchers were third in the league in strikeouts (1,123), and allowed the fewest walks (431) and fourth-fewest total home runs (167).

The Twins had a 20-game winner in ace Johan Santana, who posted a 20-6 record, but no other starter posted more than 14 wins. Carlos Silva (4.21 ERA) went 14-8, and Brad Radke, despite his 3.48 ERA, only won 11 games. No other starter compiled wins in the double digits, as Kyle Lohse, the only other regular starter throughout the season, went 9-13 with a 5.34 ERA. But Santana's season made up for it, as he posted an AL-best 2.61 ERA and an AL-leading 265 strikeouts. And this was all in his first full season as a starter. Joe Nathan had a stellar year in his first season as a closer, getting 44 saves in 47 chances while posting a 1.62 ERA with 89 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings.

The Twins have the third-highest fielding percentage in the league (.984), finishing in the middle of the pack for most other defensive statistics in 2004.

As a team, Minnesota hit .314 against New York in their six meetings this season. Morneau and Hunter each hit two home runs off the Yankees. Stewart hit a remarkable .714 (10-for-14) against Yankees pitchers, Koskie hit .588 (10-for-17), Hunter hit .389 (7-for-18) and Guzman hit .353 (6-for-17).

Twins pitchers had a 2-0 record against the Yankees this season in decisions. Radke and Santana each recorded a win, posting 2.25 ERAs. The Yankees fared far better against Minnesota's bullpen, beating Fultz, Nathan and Romero. Romero and Nathan each have 13.50 ERAs against New York.
