Minnesota Twins Begin Field Grass Installation at Target Field08/24/2009 2:09 PM ET
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn. - The Minnesota Twins announced today that crews will begin installing the field turf at Target Field at approximately 10 p.m. tonight (subject to change). Installation crews will lay large rolls of the specially grown grass overnight tonight, Tuesday, Aug. 25, Wednesday, Aug. 26 and Thursday, Aug. 27 with the field being completed by the morning of Friday, Aug. 28 (subject to change).
The grass was harvested from Graff's Turf Farms in Fort Morgan, Colo. starting at 4 a.m. today (Graff's has extensive experience in providing sod for professional sports). The grass was then loaded onto refrigerated trucks with tandem drivers, is being driven to Minnesota and will be installed upon arrival.
"This is an exciting time for fans throughout Twins Territory," said Jerry Bell, president of Twins Sports Inc. "With the grass being installed, Target Field will actually come alive in a matter of days and be one large step closer to becoming the world-class ballpark we will open in April of next year."
The grass is a blend of Kentucky Bluegrass seed chosen for its dark green color, wear tolerance and excellent winter hardiness coupled with strong summer performance. Under the grass is a complex heating, irrigation and drainage system. Heating - a network of piping spaced six-inches apart under the entire field will heat the grass in fall and early spring using a heated mixture of water and glycol. This will allow the grass to "green up" by opening day in April 2010. Drainage - a complex drainage system will allow the Twins to play ball even if an inch of rain falls just one hour before a game. Irrigation - delivers water and nutrients to the root zone, keeping the playing surface healthy and resilient.
April 2010 will be the first time the Twins have played on real grass at home since leaving Metropolitan Stadium at the end of the 1981 season.
