27.3 percent of Major League Baseball players born outside the United States

Opening Day rosters for the 30 Major League Baseball Clubs, which consist of 25-man rosters and disabled lists, included 227 players born outside the 50 United States, it was announced today. These players represent 13 foreign countries and Puerto Rico.

In total, 27.3 percent of the 830 players (750 active and 80 disabled) on rosters as of April 4, 2004 were born outside the 50 United States. The Dominican Republic leads all countries with 79 players, while Venezuela is second with 45 and Puerto Rico is third with 36. The Los Angeles Dodgers lead all Major League Baseball teams with 14 players, while the New York Yankees have the second-most with 13 and the Baltimore Orioles, Minnesota Twins and Montreal Expos each have 11 players.

Last year, 27.8 percent of players on Opening Day rosters were born outside the 50 United States.

Additionally, 47.6 percent of the 6,117 Minor League players signed to professional baseball contracts (as of 4/4/04) were born outside the 50 United States. Those 2,914 Minor League players represent 33 countries across the globe including the Dominican Republic (1,442 players), Venezuela (803), Puerto Rico (127), Canada (106) and Mexico (102).

Last year, 46 percent of Minor League players signed to professional baseball contracts as of Opening Day were born outside the 50 United States.
