08/03/2005 4:51 PM ET
Pitcher Gustavo Chacin, who won five of his six starts for Toronto in July, has been named the American League Rookie of the Month for July.

Chacin ranked second among all A.L. pitchers with five victories during the month of July. He allowed 12 earned runs on 38 hits in 36.1 IP for the Blue Jays. On July 26th against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Chacin combined with Miguel Batista for the shutout and his 10th win of the season. In his final start of the month on July 31st, Chacin again did not allow an earned run while tying a career-high with six strikeouts over 6.1 IP to beat Texas 5-1. The 24-year-old left hander is currently riding a 14.1 inning scoreless streak. This is the second A.L. Rookie of the Month Award for Chacin, who also won the award in April. He is the first pitcher ever to win multiple Rookie of the Month Awards since its inception in 2001. Rocco Baldelli, Josh Phelps, and Ichiro Suzuki each won multiple Rookie of the Month awards during their respective rookie campaigns.

Chacin beat out a contingent of Oakland Athletics rookies that included first baseman Dan Johnson (.364, 4 HR, 12 RBI), outfielder Nick Swisher (.278, 6 HR, 21 RBI) and closer Huston Street (2-0, 1.20 ERA, 5 SV).

Chacin will receive another specially designed trophy as the American League Rookie of the Month for August.
