New York Mets third baseman David Wright, who led the league with 10 home runs and 29 RBI, and San Diego Padres right-hander Chris Young, who had the league's lowest ERA among starting pitchers (1.17), have been voted National League Player and Pitcher of the Month of June, respectively.
A 2006 National League All-Star, Wright also led the league with a .664 slugging percentage. The 23-year old right-handed slugger batted .327 (35-107) with 20 runs, four doubles, one triple, a .385 on-base percentage and three stolen bases. He also tied a career record by hitting a home run in three straight games, June 13-15. David becomes the first Met to earn the honor since fellow third baseman Howard Johnson won in September 1991.
Young went undefeated in June, going 3-0 over his five starts. He pitched 30.2 innings, allowing 16 hits, five runs, four earned, with 13 walks and 34 strikeouts. The Princeton alumnus set a career-high with a 12-strikeout game on June 9th vs. Florida. The 6'10" ace, who is tied for second for being the tallest pitcher in Major League history, did not allow more than two earned runs in any of his starts. This is the first time he has earned the honor.
