Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who led the Majors with 14 home runs and 41 RBI, and Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Derek Lowe, who put together a 1.69 ERA over six appearances, have been voted the National League Player and Pitcher of the Month of August, respectively.

Howard's RBI total for the month was the highest by a Major League player in any month since July of 1962 when Frank Howard of the Dodgers also had 41 RBI. On the final day of the month, the overwhelming choice for the August award hit his 49th home run of the season, breaking Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt's single-season franchise record of 48 set in 1980. The left-handed hitter batted .348 (39-112) with 25 runs and three doubles. He compiled a .750 slugging percentage and a .464 on-base percentage over 29 games played. This is the first time the sophomore has earned monthly honors.

Lowe started five games and added one relief appearance to finish 4-1 during the month of August. He pitched 37.1 innings, allowed 26 hits, three walks and struck out 26 batters. On August 29, Derek made his first relief appearance since the 2004 playoffs as a member of the Boston Red Sox. He pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn his 12th victory of the season for the N.L. West-leading Dodgers, matching his season total from last year. This is Derek's first N.L. Pitcher of the Month Award. He was named the A.L. Pitcher of the Month in April 2002.

Other pitchers receiving votes were Houston's Roger Clemens, who went 4-0 with a 2.54 ERA and 33 strikeouts, and Andy Pettitte, who went 4-2 with a 2.27 ERA and 49 strikeouts; Lowe's Los Angeles teammates Chad Billingsley, who went 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 25 strikeouts, and Greg Maddux, who went 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA and 18 strikeouts; Atlanta's Bob Wickman, who compiled an 0.79 ERA and eight saves; Florida's Joe Borowski, who went 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 10 saves; New York's Steve Trachsel, who went 5-0 with a 4.50 ERA and 21 strikeouts, and Billy Wagner, who went 0-1 with a 2.19 ERA and 10 saves; and San Francisco's Noah Lowry, who went 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA and 25 strikeouts.

Ryan Howard and Derek Lowe will each receive a specially designed trophy for being voted National League Player and Pitcher of the Month.
