The first-time All-Star in 2006 finished third in the American League batting race behind Minnesota's Joe Mauer (.347) and double-play partner Derek Jeter (.343). This is Cano's first Player of the Month honors.
Santana went 3-1 in five starts with a 1.78 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 35.1 innings pitched. The 27-year-old left-hander did not allow a run over his first two wins: September 5 against Tampa Bay (8 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 12 SO) and September 10 against Detroit (6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 11 SO). In his final start against Kansas City on September 26, the 2004 A.L. Cy Young Award winner went eight innings, allowing two earned runs, seven hits and no walks, while striking out five. Santana finished the 2006 season at 19-6 with a 2.77 ERA and 245 strikeouts. His ERA and strikeout totals led the Majors, while 19 victories tied for the Major League lead. This is Santana's second Pitcher of the Month honors of the season (previous: June) and the sixth monthly award of his career.
Frank Thomas (.265, 10- HR, 31 RBI) of the Oakland Athletics finished second in the voting to Cano (.265, 10 HR, 31 RBI).
