New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana have been named the American League Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for September.

Cano reached base safely in 25 games during the month of September and finished with 73 total bases. In 28 games, the 23-year-old batted .373 (41-110) with seven home runs and 28 RBI (tied for second most in the AL). He had a 12- game hitting streak from September 18-30. Cano also had 11 doubles and scored 15 runs while posting a .383 on-base percentage and a .664 slugging percentage. He had 13 multi-hit games and drove in two or more runs on seven different occasions. Against Kansas City on September 4, Cano went 4-for-5 with a double, home run, three RBI and two runs scored. On September 13 against Tampa Bay, he went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and five RBI. Cano ended the regular season batting .342 with 15 home runs and 78 RBI in 122 games. The first-time All-Star in 2006 finished third in the American League batting race behind Minnesota's Joe Mauer (.347) and double-play partner Derek Jeter (.343). This is Cano's first Player of the Month honors.

Santana went 3-1 in five starts with a 1.78 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 35.1 innings pitched. The 27-year-old left-hander did not allow a run over his first two wins: September 5 against Tampa Bay (8 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 12 SO) and September 10 against Detroit (6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 11 SO). In his final start against Kansas City on September 26, the 2004 A.L. Cy Young Award winner went eight innings, allowing two earned runs, seven hits and no walks, while striking out five. Santana finished the 2006 season at 19-6 with a 2.77 ERA and 245 strikeouts. His ERA and strikeout totals led the Majors, while 19 victories tied for the Major League lead. This is Santana's second Pitcher of the Month honors of the season (previous: June) and the sixth monthly award of his career.

Frank Thomas (.265, 10- HR, 31 RBI) of the Oakland Athletics finished second in the voting to Cano (.265, 10 HR, 31 RBI). Teammate Boof Bonser (4-1, 2.63 ERA, 30 SO) and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Francisco Rodriguez (1- 1, 1.04 ERA, 10 SV, 29 SO) finished tied for second to Santana. Also receiving votes were Twins outfielder Torii Hunter, New York third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Chicago White Sox hurler Freddy Garcia.

Cano and Santana each will receive a specially designed trophy as American League Player and Pitcher of the Month.
