Alfonso Soriano named winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month presented by Pepsi" for September

Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs was selected by the fans, as the winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" for September, it was announced today. Soriano is the winner of the officially-sanctioned Major League Baseball award, which recognizes the player who performed his best when the game was on the line. Pepsi has been the "Official Soft Drink of Major League Baseball" since 1997.

The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" winner is selected by the fans from a list of six nominees chosen by a special editorial panel from Major League Baseball Advanced Media. During the first week of each month, fans can visit a microsite hosted by that has been created specifically for the Clutch Performer Platform,, to vote for the player they believe was the best Clutch Performer during the previous month.

Soriano blasted 14 home runs, breaking Hall of Famer Ernie Banks' Cubs franchise record for most home runs in the month of September. The left fielder batted .320 with 11 doubles, 22 runs and 27 RBI in 28 games played. When his team needed him in the clutch, Alfonso connected for his 13th home run of the month to propel the Cubs to a 6-0 victory over the Reds on September 28th, clinching its first NL Central Division title since 2003. The right handed slugger hit a game-winning two-run home run to defeat the divisional rival St. Louis Cardinals on September 15th and added a two home run, five RBI performance on September 22nd to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates.

At the conclusion of the season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi" award winner at, the official Web site of Major League Baseball. The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi" award will be presented during the Major League Baseball postseason.
