Jason Giambi named winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" for June07/11/2008 12:10 PM ET
Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees was selected by fans in an online vote as the winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" for June, it was announced today. The award recognizes the player who performed his best when the game was on the line. Pepsi has been the "Official Soft Drink of Major League Baseball" since 1997.
The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" winner is selected by the fans from a list of six nominees chosen by a special editorial panel from MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball. During the first week of each month, fans can visit a microsite powered by MLB.com specifically created for the Clutch Performer Platform, pepsiclutch.mlb.com, to vote for the nominee they believe was the best Clutch Performer during the previous month.
In 27 games during June, Giambi batted .305 (25-for-82) with six home runs and 19 RBI. The 37-year-old first baseman collected three doubles, a triple and 16 runs scored while posting a .585 slugging percentage and a .430 on-base percentage. Jason had six multi-hit games, including a three-hit performance on June 22nd vs. Cincinnati. On June 5th against Toronto, with the Yankees trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Giambi blasted a pinch-hit, walk-off home run to give the Bronx Bombers a 9-8 win. On June 17th against the Padres at home, the left-handed slugger belted two home runs to guide the Yankees to an 8-0 victory. Giambi, a Long Beach State product in his seventh season with the Yankees, is hitting .256 on the year with 18 home runs and 53 RBI.
At the conclusion of the season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi" award winner at MLB.com and the award will be presented during the Major League Baseball postseason. Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees was named the inaugural recipient of the "2007 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi."
