Baltimore Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora named Sharp Presents the American League Player of the Month for August09/03/2008 3:46 PM ET
Third baseman Melvin Mora of the Baltimore Orioles has been named the Sharp Presents the American League Player of the Month for August. This marks his second career monthly award honor (previous: May 2004). In 24 games last month, Mora batted .418 (41-for-98) with eight home runs and a Major League-high 32 RBI. The 36-year-old infielder posted a .765 slugging percentage and a .455 on-base percentage. The Venezuela native collected 17 extra-base hits, including eight doubles. Mora notched 13 multi-hit games in August and assembled an eight-game hitting streak from August 1st-10th. The two-time A.L. All-Star enjoyed a career day on August 17th at Detroit, going 5-for-6 with two doubles, two home runs, four runs scored and six RBI as part of Baltimore's 16-8 win. Overall, Mora had five games in August in which he collected four-or-more RBI. On the season, Mora is batting .283 with 74 runs, 27 doubles, 23 home runs and 97 RBI. Others nominees receiving votes were Seattle Mariners outfielder Raul Ibañez (.396, 9 2B, 7 HR, 31 RBI); Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia (.374, 10 2B, 6 HR, 20 RBI); Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Peña (.278, 6 2B, 9 HR, 29 RBI); Detroit Tigers infielder Miguel Cabrera (.270, 10 HR, 25 RBI); Texas Rangers outfielder Marlon Byrd (.393, 11 2B, 20 RBI); and Mora's teammate, Orioles designated hitter Aubrey Huff (.345, 11 2B, 8 HR, 26 RBI). For setting the highest definition of excellence, Sharp, the presenting sponsor of the American League Player of the Month Award, presents Melvin Mora with a 52" AQUOS. Sharp AQUOS is the "Official High-Definition Television of Major League Baseball." Mora will also receive a specially designed trophy to mark his achievements.
