Ryan Howard named winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" for September09/30/2008 1:11 PM ET
Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies was selected by fans in an online vote as the winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" for September, it was announced today. The award recognizes the player who performed his best when the game was on the line. Pepsi has been the "Official Soft Drink of Major League Baseball" since 1997.
The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" winner is selected by the fans from a list of six nominees chosen by a special editorial panel from MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball. Each month, fans can visit a microsite powered by MLB.com specifically created for the Clutch Performer Platform, pepsiclutch.mlb.com, to vote for the nominee they believe was the best Clutch Performer.
In 25 games during September, Howard batted .352 (31-for-88) with seven doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 32 RBI and 26 runs scored as he helped lead the Philadelphia Phillies to their second consecutive N.L. East Division title. The 28-year-old first baseman posted a slugging percentage of .852 and an on-base percentage of .422. Ryan recorded nine multi-hit games, including consecutive multi-hit games on Sept. 7th against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium and Sept. 8th-9th vs. Florida. The left-handed slugger posted his fifth multi-home run game of the season with a pair of two-run homers on Sept. 3rd at Washington and he went 4-for-5 with a triple, home run and three RBI on Sept. 16th at Atlanta. The 2006 National League Most Valuable Player led the N.L. in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage for the month and he finished the season with N.L.-best totals of 48 HR and 146 RBI. With his 48 home runs, Howard became the first Phillies player ever with three consecutive 40-homer seasons.
At the conclusion of the season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi" award winner at MLB.com and the award will be presented during the Major League Baseball postseason. Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees was named the inaugural recipient of the "2007 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi."
