Soria named winner of the DHL Presents MLB Delivery Man of the Month Award for September10/06/2008 1:13 PM ET
Joakim Soria of the Kansas City Royals has been selected as the winner of the "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for September, it was announced today. This officially-sanctioned Major League Baseball (MLB) award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season.
Soria made 10 appearances in September, and went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA while converting each of his nine save opportunities. In 10.1 innings, Joakim permitted just three hits with four walks and eight strikeouts while helping the Royals to an 18-8 September mark. The 24-year-old right-hander recorded saves in three consecutive contests from September 15th-17th against the Seattle Mariners without allowing a hit or a walk over the three-game set. A native of Monclova, Mexico, Soria finished the season 2-3 with a 1.60 ERA and 42 saves in 67.1 innings pitched over 63 appearances. The All-Star closer surrendered 39 hits with 19 walks and 66 strikeouts, and finished second in the A.L. in saves behind Francisco Rodriguez (62) of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Soria now holds the singleseason record for saves by a Mexican-born closer after breaking Juan Acevedo's mark of 28 set in 2002 with the Detroit Tigers.
In recognition of this honor, DHL will donate $1,500 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City in Soria's name. This donation will be made in conjunction with the Baseball Tomorrow Fund (BTF), a joint initiative of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association. With this donation, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City will have the opportunity to purchase a pitching machine package from ATEC, the official supplier of pitching machines and other training equipment for MLB. In addition, Soria will be recognized in a special advertisement this week in USA Today.
