Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, the leader behind the plate in American League All-Star balloting, has been named the Sharp Presents the American League Player of the Month for May. This marks Joe's second career monthly award honor (previous: June 2006).

In 28 games last month, Mauer batted a Major League-best .414 (41-99) with seven doubles, 11 home runs and 32 RBI, leading the Majors with a .838 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. The 26-year-old's home run and RBI totals marked the first time in Twins history that a player exceeded 11 homers and 30 RBI in a month. The two-time A.L. batting champion put together a career-high 14-game hitting streak from May 7th-21st, compiling seven homers and seven multi-hit games in that span. In the final game of the hitting streak, Joe hit his second career grand slam and accumulated a career-high six RBI en route to a 20-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Mauer, the top overall pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft, homered in three consecutive games for the first time in his career from May 23rd-25th, the last day of which included his first career pinch-hit homer vs. the Boston Red Sox. His 12 homers in 2009 (11 hit in May) are one shy of his career-high of 13 in 2006, the year he earned his first batting title.

The runner-up was New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, who batted .330 (38-115) and led the Majors with 13 home runs and 34 RBI. Teixeira's 130 point increase in batting average from April (.200) to May (.330) was the largest among A.L. players who qualified in both months. Also receiving votes was Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who hit .340 (36-106) with two doubles, six home runs, 23 RBI and 19 runs scored.
