Tim Lincecum named winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month presented by Pepsi" for June07/08/2009 3:31 PM ET
Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants was selected by fans in an online vote as the winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" for June, it was announced today. The award recognizes the player who performed his best when the game was on the line. Pepsi has been the "Official Soft Drink of Major League Baseball" since 1997. The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" winner is selected by the fans from a list of six nominees chosen by a special editorial panel from MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball. During the first week of each month, fans can visit a microsite powered by MLB.com specifically created for the Clutch Performer platform, pepsiclutch.mlb.com, to vote for the nominee they believe was the best Clutch Performer during the previous month. Fans can also go to the site to enter a season long sweepstakes for a trip for two to the 2009 & 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Games. Lincecum went 4-1 over six starts in June, posting a 1.48 ERA with three complete games and two shutouts. In 48.2 innings pitched, he allowed eight earned runs on 35 hits with nine walks and 48 strikeouts. The 25-year-old right-hander collected at least seven strikeouts in five of his six starts and pitched 7.1 innings-or-more in five starts. Lincecum, who was selected to his second All-Star Game earlier this week, tossed an eight-strikeout shutout on June 12th vs. Oakland, a 12-strikeout performance on June 23rd at Oakland, and a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts on June 29th at St. Louis. With the two-hitter, the reigning N.L. Cy Young Award winner set a new career-best for a complete game, surpassing a four-hit complete game on September 13, 2008. In addition, the Bellevue, Washington native became the first Giants pitcher to hurl three complete games in a four-game span since Jason Schmidt accomplished the feat in June 2003. Lincecum, who was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, is tied with Detroit's Justin Verlander for the Major League-lead with 141 strikeouts and tied for first in the National League with three complete games (Matt Cain, SF) and two shutouts (Joel Piñeiro, STL). At the conclusion of the season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi" award winner at MLB.com and the award will be presented during the Major League Baseball postseason.
