Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees has been selected as the winner of the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award for July, it was announced today. This Major League Baseball award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season as voted on by a panel from Major League Baseball.

Rivera converted each of his save opportunities for a Major League-best 10 saves in his 12 games in July. In 11.2 scoreless innings pitched, the 39-year-old right-hander permitted just three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. The 10-time All-Star recorded saves in three consecutive games against the Detroit Tigers from July 17th-19th at Yankee Stadium, yielding only one hit and one walk over the three appearances. Rivera, a native of Panama City, Panama, also notched saves in back-to-back games on July 8th-9th at Minnesota and July 21st-22nd against the Orioles. Rivera held hitters to a .081 batting average, matching his career-best for a month, which he set in June 2005. Rivera tossed 107 of 155 pitches in July for a strike, and now has not allowed an earned run since June 12th, a span of 19 appearances. Mariano, who ranks second all-time behind Milwaukee's Trevor Hoffman with 513 career saves, is 1-2 with a 1.96 ERA and a Major League-leading 31 saves on the season. In 46.0 innings, he has permitted just six walks with 50 strikeouts while holding hitters to a .203 batting average. Rivera, whose current streak of 27 straight converted save chances is the longest in the Majors, also recorded his fourth career All-Star Game save on July 14th at Busch Stadium, passing Dennis Eckersley for sole possession of first on the all-time list. He is just the fourth player in Major League history to register at least 30 saves in seven straight seasons, joining Hoffman (eight, 1995-2002), Robb Nen (1996-2002) and Troy Percival (1998-2004). This is Mariano's second Delivery Man of the Month Award, having previously won in April 2008. Rivera also won the Delivery Man of the Year Award in 2005 and 2006.

Other relievers receiving votes included Huston Street (1-0, 0.87 ERA, 8 SV, 10.1 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 12 SO) of the Rockies; Kevin Gregg (1-0, 1.93 ERA, 8 SV, 14.0 IP, 9 H, 5 BB, 14 SO) of the Cubs; Minnesota's Joe Nathan (0-0, 1.69 ERA, 9 SV, 10.2 IP, 5 H, 3 BB, 13 SO); and Seattle's David Aardsma (1-1, 2.08 ERA, 9 SV, 13.0 IP, 8 H, 5 BB, 12 SO).
