Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week04/12/2010 5:53 PM ET
Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Roy Halladay has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2010 season. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.
In his first week in the National League, Halladay posted a perfect 2-0 record with a 0.56 ERA while tying for the Major League lead in strikeouts with 17 and leading Major League Baseball with 16.0 innings pitched and a complete game. The Colorado native surpassed 1,500 career strikeouts on Opening Day and notched his 150th career victory and 50th career complete game on April 11th.
Halladay made his eighth consecutive Opening Day start on April 5th at Washington, holding the Nationals to one run through 7.0 innings of work and leading the Phillies to an 11-1 victory. The All-Star hurler also helped his own cause at the plate, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. On April 11th, Halladay outdueled Astros starter Roy Oswalt for a 2-1 victory in a match-up of the players with the highest career winning percentages among active pitchers with at least 250 starts. The 2003 A.L. Cy Young Award-winner was true to form, spreading seven Astros hits across his 9.0 innings of work while fanning eight and allowing only an unearned run. The complete-game victory continued a dominant stretch by Halladay during which he has allowed a single earned run over 40.0 IP (0.22 ERA) dating back to last season, spanning five starts. This is Halladay's fourth career weekly award overall and his first in the NL.
Other nominees this past week included Atlanta's Martin Prado (.542, 13 H, 3 2B, .607 OBP) and Jason Heyward (.292, 3 HR, 8 RBI); Philadelphia's Placido Polanco (.481, 13 H, 8 RBI, 8 R) and Ryan Howard (.357, 3 HR, 10 RBI, .857 SLG); Florida's Jorge Cantú (.320, 10 RBI, .720 SLG); Albert Pujols (.375, 4 HR, .875 SLG) of the Cardinals; Arizona's Chris Young (.292, 3 HR, 11 RBI, .708 SLG); San Francisco's Tim Lincecum (2-0, 1.29 ERA, 14.0 IP, 17 SO); and Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez (2-0, 2.25 ERA, 13 SO).
