Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week06/01/2010 3:51 PM ET
Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Roy Halladay, who threw baseball's 18th perfect game of the modern era on Saturday, has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the period of May 24-30, 2010. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.
On Sunday, May 30th, Halladay was perfect, using his 115 pitches to retire 27 straight Florida Marlins batters en route to Philadelphia's 1-0 victory at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Halladay's perfect game came less than three weeks after Oakland Athletics starter Dallas Braden achieved perfection, marking the first time in the modern era that there have been two perfect games in the same season. Halladay's gem is the second by a Phillie, joining that of Hall of Famer Jim Bunning, whose feat was against the New York Mets on June 21, 1964. It is the first perfect game thrown by an N.L. pitcher since 2004 (Arizona's Randy Johnson at ATL on 5/18/04). Halladay's 11 strikeouts are tied for third most in a perfect game in baseball history. The six-time All-Star, who improved his record to 7-3 on the season with a 1.99 ERA, is now only the fifth pitcher ever both to win a Cy Young Award and also throw a perfect game, joining Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax and Catfish Hunter along with Johnson and David Cone. This is Roy's fifth career weekly award and his second of the 2010 season, having also won for the opening week of the 2010 season at the start of his N.L. career.
Other nominees this past week included Albert Pujols (.364, 4 HR, 9 RBI) of the St. Louis Cardinals; Jose Reyes (.500, .536 OBP, 13 H) and R.A. Dickey (2-0, 2.77, 10 SO) of the New York Mets; Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez (.421, 3 HR, .947 SLG, 9 R), Seth Smith (.353, 3 HR, 1.000 SLG) and Ubaldo Jimenez (1-0, 0.00 ERA); Cincinnati's Miguel Cairo (.478, 2 HR, .826 SLG) and Aaron Harang (2-0, 3.38, 13.1 IP); Washington's Josh Willingham (.333, 2 HR, 8 RBI); Atlanta's Martín Prado (.448, 13 H, .483 OBP); and Marlins right-hander Anibal Sanchez (2-0, 1.38 ERA, 13 SO).
