Rafael Furcal named Bank of America presents the National League Player of the Week

Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the period of June 21-27, 2010. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Furcal led the Majors with a .538 (14-for-26) batting average, nine runs scored and 24 total bases in six games last week. The 32- year-old veteran slugged a N.L.-leading .923, while his .571 on-base percentage placed second. Furcal led the Dodgers to a 5-1 record on the week, including a three-game sweep at San Francisco. The Loma de Cabrera, Dominican Republic native went 9-for-14 in the series (.643) with a home run and five runs scored. Furcal's bat continued to sizzle into the weekend, as he extended his multi-hit steak to seven games (dating back to June 26th) with a 2-for-4 performance in a 14-1 win at Arizona on July 3rd. The fleet-footed shortstop went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in a 3-1 win over Arizona on July 4th, marking the 10th consecutive game in which he had scored a run for his club. This is Furcal's second career weekly award, the first being for the period of July 5-11, 2004, as a member of the Atlanta Braves.

Other nominees this past week included Jason Bay of the New York Mets (.292, 10 RBI, .667 SLG), Atlanta's Gregor Blanco (.450, 9 H, .476 OBP); Florida's Chris Coghlan (.364, 8 H, 7 R, .481 OBP) and Ricky Nolasco (2-0, 3.21 ERA, 20 SO); Colorado's Dexter Fowler (.417, .792 SLG, 10 H, 2 SB) and Carlos Gonzalez (.923 SLG, 4 HR, 8 RBI); San Diego's Scott Hairston (7 H, 2 2B, 10 RBI) and Mat Latos (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 8.0 IP); Felipe Lopez (.444, 12 H, .500 OBP), Albert Pujols (.296, 4 HR, 9 RBI) and Adam Wainwright (2-0, 0.59 ERA, CG, 16 SO) of the Cardinals; and Cincinatti's Joey Votto (.385, .769 SLG, 3 HR, 7 RBI) and Johnny Cueto (1-0, 0.69 ERA, 13.0 IP).
