San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey has been voted the July recipient of the Gillette presents National League Rookie of the Month Award.
Posey led all National Leaguers with 43 hits during July and was third in the league with a .417 batting average (43-for-103), tied for third with 24 RBI, fourth with a .466 on-base percentage and fifth with a .699 slugging percentage. Posey surpassed Jim Ray Hart for the most hits by a San Francisco rookie in one month and tied Hart's San Francisco rookie record for RBI in one month. In addition, his seven home runs were the most in one month by a Giants rookie since Jack Clark also hit seven in 1977. On July 7th at Milwaukee, Posey set career-highs with four hits, two home runs and six RBI in San Francisco's 15-2 victory. The 23-year-old backstop became the first rookie catcher in Major League history to be behind the plate for back-to-back shutouts started by former Cy Young Award winners on July 15th (Tim Lincecum) and July 16th (Barry Zito). The Leesburg, Georgia native had a career-best 21-game hitting streak from July 4th - 29th and batted .440 (37-for-84) during the streak. The streak was the secondlongest hitting streak by a rookie in San Francisco-era history behind Willie McCovey's 22-game hitting streak in 1959. Posey recorded a hit in 25 of his 27 games played, including nine two-hit games and three four-hit contests. Buster leads all N.L. rookies with a .356 batting average, .399 on-base percentage and .538 slugging percentage. He also ranks sixth in home runs (8) and multi-hit games (21), and seventh in hits (74). Buster was also selected the National League Player of the Month for July and becomes the first N.L. rookie tow in both honors since Milwaukee's Ryan Braun did so in July 2007.
The only other rookie to receive votes for the award was St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay (.431, 2 HR, 11 RBI).
Posey will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
