Oakland Athletics right-hander Trevor Cahill has been named of the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending August 8th. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

In two outings last week, Trevor posted a perfect 2-0 record and 0.00 ERA while leading the Majors with 17.0 innings pitched. On Monday, August 2nd, the 2010 A.L. All-Star recorded his first career complete game, a three-hit shutout against the Kansas City Royals at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum extending his scoreless innings streak to 18. At 22 years, 154 days, the California native became the third-youngest A's pitcher to toss a shutout over the last 32 years, behind Brett Anderson (2009 - 21 years, 155 days) and Barry Zito (2000 - 22 years, 120 days). On Sunday, Cahill notched his third win in as many starts with a 3-2 victory over the A.L. West-leading Texas Rangers. Trevor tossed 8.0 innings, permitting two unearned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Cahill, who was selected by the A's in the second round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, has now made 19 consecutive starts in which he has pitched at least 5.0 innings and allowed six hits or less. It is the second longest such streak in modern Major League history (since 1900), one behind Nolan Ryan's record of 20 set from July 27, 1972 to April 18, 1973 while with the California Angels. This marks the first career weekly award for Cahill, who is 12-4 with a 2.56 ERA during the 2010 season.

Other noteworthy performances for the week included Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Brandon Morrow (2-0, 3.14 ERA, 14.1 IP, 26 SO), who came within one out of pitching a no-hitter on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays; New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira (.320, 4 HR, 10 RBI); third baseman Adrian Beltre (.370, 3 HR, 9 RBI) of the Red Sox; and second baseman Chone Figgins (.522, 4 RBI, 3 SB) of the Mariners.
