Joe Mauer Named Winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Award Presented by Pepsi" for August09/07/2010 1:23 PM ET
Joe Mauer of the Minnesota Twins was selected by fans in an online vote as the winner of the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Award Presented by Pepsi" for August, it was announced today. The award recognizes the player who performed his best when the game was on the line. Pepsi has been the "Official Soft Drink of Major League Baseball" since 1997.
The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Award Presented by Pepsi" winner is selected by the fans from a list of six nominees chosen by a special editorial panel from MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball. During the first week of each month, fans can visit a microsite, pepsiclutch.mlb.com, powered by MLB.com specifically created for the Clutch Performer platform to vote for the nominee they believe was the best Clutch Performer during the previous month.
Mauer batted .380 (35-for-92) with two home runs and 16 RBI in 26 games during August. The 2009 A.L. MVP also collected seven doubles and 17 runs scored with a .522 slugging percentage and a .482 on-base percentage. The 27-year-old backstop recorded a hit in 19 of his 26 games, including eight multi-hit games and four multi-RBI contests to guide the A.L. Central-leading Twins to an 18-10 mark during the month. The St. Paul, Minnesota native added a .407 batting average and a .522 slugging percentage with 13 RBI while hitting with runners in scoring position. On August 10th against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, Mauer collected an RBI-double in the first inning and followed with a two-run home run in the second inning to put the Twins in front 5-0. Joe finished the contest 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in Minnesota's 12-6 victory. On August 18th against the White Sox, Joe delivered his second four-hit game of the month as he hit his first career home run at Target Field to lead the Twins to a 7-6 win. In six August games against the White Sox, Joe hit .423 (11-for-26) with two home runs and five RBI as the Twins took four of six from their division rival. On August 23rd at Texas, the four-time All-Star spoiled the Rangers' bid for a no-hitter as he singled up the middle off closer Neftali Feliz with one out in the ninth inning. It marked the second time in Mauer's career that he has broken up a no-hit bid in the ninth inning (May 6, 2008 vs. Chicago White Sox).
At the conclusion of the season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on the "Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Award Presented by Pepsi" winner at MLB.com and the award will be presented during the Major League Baseball postseason. Last season, Andre Ethier was named the recipient of the "2009 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Award Presented by Pepsi."
