Rockies Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki Named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week09/20/2010 4:38 PM ET
Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the period of September 13-19, 2010, marking the second consecutive week that he has been selected for the honor. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.
In six games last week, Tulowitzki hit .346 (9-for-26) and, for the second straight week, led the Majors with six home runs. Tulowitzki's 17 RBI and 28 total bases were also tops in baseball while his nine runs scored were tied for first. Tulo slugged an N.L.-best 1.077 while posting a .393 on-base percentage for the week. In a 9-6 win over the San Diego Padres on September 15th, the California-native clubbed a pair of three-run homers and added a run-scoring single to set a new career-best with seven RBI. Tulowitzki homered twice for the second time this week on September 18th, and added a double and three runs scored in a 12-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 25-year-old has 12 home runs in his last 13 games with 28 RBI and 18 runs scored in that span. The 2010 N.L. All-Star ranks second in the N.L. with a .322 batting average on the season, trailing only teammate Carlos Gonzalez (.340). Troy's 89 RBI leads all Major League shortstops, while his 14 game-winning RBI this year are tied for fourth-most in the Majors this season. With a .986 fielding percentage and .590 slugging percentage on the season, Tulowitzki is on-pace to become the first player to lead N.L. shortstops in both categories since Jay Bell accomplished the feat with Pittsburgh in 1993. His 99 double plays are tied for third-best among Major League shortstops. This is Troy's fourth-career weekly award (winning previously September 6-12, 2010; September 14-20, 2009; and August 6-12, 2007).
Other nominees this past week included Tulowitzki's teammates Carlos Gonzalez (.417, 10 H, 9 R, 7 RBI) and Melvin Mora (.429, 3 2B, 8 RBI); Milwaukee's Ryan Braun (.385, 3 HR, 4 2B, .407 OBP); Cincinnati's Jay Bruce (.364, 3 HR, 7 RBI) and Bronson Arroyo (2-0, 2.25, 13 SO, 12.0 IP); Philadelphia's Raul Ibañez (.476, 5 RBI, 10 H, 8 R) and Jayson Werth (.360, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 9 R); Yadier Molina (.474, 3 2B, 8 RBI) and Colby Rasmus (.385, 2 HR, 10 H, 9 R) of the Cardinals; San Diego's Will Venable (.500, 11 H, 4 R, SB, .560 OBP); Arizona's Daniel Hudson (1-0, 0.63, 14 SO, 14.1 IP); Atlanta's Derek Lowe (2-0, 1.29, 14 SO, 14.0 IP); and Houston's Brett Myers (2-0, 0.64, 15 SO, 14.0 IP).
