Pittsburgh Pirates rookie third baseman Pedro Alvarez has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for the period of September 20-26, 2010. In six games last week, Alvarez batted .417 (10-24) with two home runs and a Major League-leading 13 RBI. The slugger led the National League with 20 total bases, tied for the N.L. lead with four doubles, and also ranked among leaders in hits (10) and slugging percentage (.833). Alvarez recorded a .400 on-base percentage with four runs scored and hit safely in every game last week, including three multi-hit efforts. On Wednesday, September 22nd, the Vanderbilt University product went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and four RBI, leading the Pirates to an 11-6 win over the visiting Cardinals.
