Carlos Marmol of the Chicago Cubs has been selected as the winner of the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award for September, it was announced today. This Major League Baseball award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season as voted on by a panel from Major League Baseball.

Marmol converted each of his 13 save opportunities and did not allow a run in 15 appearances during September. In 14.2 innings pitched, he permitted just two hits with 10 walks and led all Major League relievers with 25 strikeouts. On September 22nd against the San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field, Marmol protected a 2-0 Cubs lead by recording four outs, all via strikeout. On September 25th against the Cardinals at home, Carlos collected three strikeouts en route to a career-high 131, passing Bruce Sutter (1977) for the most in a single season by a Cubs reliever. The 27-year-old right-hander closed out three games in four days at San Diego from September 27th-30th, yielding just one hit and two walks with five strikeouts over 3.0 innings. Marmol, who finished the season with 138 strikeouts in 77.2 innings pitched, set a new Major League record with 15.99 strikeouts per nine innings, eclipsing the previous record of 14.98 strikeouts per nine innings, accomplished by Eric Gagne in 2003 for the Los Angeles Dodgers. With 38 saves in 2010, the Bonao, Dominican Republic native saved more than half of Chicago's 75 victories for the season, becoming the first Cubs closer to do so since Rod Beck recorded a save in 51 of the team's 90 wins in 1998. Marmol finished the season by holding opponents scoreless over his last 19 outings (18.2 innings pitched). During that time, opposing batters hit .067 (4-for-60).

Other relievers receiving votes included San Francisco's Brian Wilson (0-1, 1.26 ERA, 10 SV, 14.1 IP, 15 SO), who helped the Giants win the N.L. West title; Juan Gutierrez (0-0, 1.59 ERA, 9 SV, 11.1 IP, 9 SO) of the Diamondbacks; and Matt Capps (0-0, 2.25 ERA, 9 SV, 12.0 IP, 10 SO), who is a part of the A.L. Central Champion Minnesota Twins.
