Michael Pineda of the Seattle Mariners voted winner of the Gillette Presents American League Rookie of the Month Award for April05/03/2011 5:21 PM ET
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Michael Pineda has been voted the April recipient of the Gillette presents American League Rookie of the Month Award.
Pineda, who went 4-1 with a 2.01 ERA over five starts in April, tied all Major League rookie pitchers for the lead in wins and ranked second in strikeouts with 30. The 22-year-old right-hander tossed 31.1 innings, allowing 22 hits and seven earned runs while issuing 12 walks and holding opposing batters to a .198 batting average. Pineda pitched at least 6.0 innings in each of his five starts, and allowed no more than five hits in each. The Dominican Republic native has recorded wins in each of his last four starts after suffering a loss in his Major League debut on April 5th against the defending American League Champion Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. In his first start at Safeco Field on April 12th against the Toronto Blue Jays, Michael tossed a season-best 7.1 innings, permitting two runs (one earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks to collect his first career victory in the 3-2 win. In his last start on April 28th at Detroit, Pineda recorded a career-best nine strikeouts over 6.0 innings to earn the 7-2 victory, becoming just the fifth rookie pitcher in modern Major League history (since 1900) to win four consecutive starts in one season before the end of April, joining Monte Weaver (1932 Washington Senators), Jerry Koosman (1968 New York Mets), Fernando Valenzuela (1981 Los Angeles Dodgers - five in a row) and Kaz Ishii (2002 Los Angels Dodgers - five in a row). With his four victories in April, Michael became the first Mariners rookie starter to win four games in a month since Freddy Garcia accomplished the feat in August 1999.
Other rookies receiving votes included left-handed pitcher Zach Britton (4-1, 2.84 ERA, 31.2 IP, 19 SO) of the Orioles; right-handed pitcher Aaron Crow (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 G, 13.2 IP, 14 SO) of the Royals; and first baseman Mark Trumbo (.239, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 5 2B, 11 R) and closer Jordan Walden (0-1, 0.73 ERA, 4 SV, 12.1 IP, 12 SO) of the Angels.
Pineda will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
