Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period of June 13-19, 2011. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In seven games last week, Upton led the Majors with 16 hits and a .552 (16-for-29) batting average while ranking second in the N.L. in total bases (23), third in on-base percentage (.563) and tied for third in RBI (seven). The Virginia native ranked fifth in the N.L. with a .563 slugging percentage, and added one home run and four doubles. The first overall pick of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft added four runs scored to his weekly totals and swiped two bases. On Thursday, June 16th against the San Francisco Giants, Upton hit his first-career walk-off home run to give the D-backs a 3-2 win over the defending World Series Champions at Chase Field. The game-winning homer was Upton's fourth walk-off RBI of the season, which is tops in the Majors and tied for the franchise mark set by Alex Cintron in 2005. The right-handed-hitting slugger logged the third of his four three-hit performances this week on Friday, June 17th, as the Diamondbacks took the first game of the weekend's Interleague matchup with the White Sox, 4-1. It was Upton's fifth consecutive multi-hit performance and it marked the longest span of consecutive multi-hit games by a D-back player this season. After being held hitless for just the fourth time in his past 20 games on Saturday, Upton went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in a losing effort on Sunday as the Sox took the rubber match of the three-game set, 8-2. The 23-year-old is hitting .302 with 12 home runs and 38 RBI this season and is four hits shy of his 500th career hit. This is his first career weekly award.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Washington's Danny Espinosa (.444, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 12 H, .889 SLG, .444 OBP, 2 SB), Mike Morse (.375, 3 HR, 7 RBI, .917 SLG), Roger Bernadina (.458, 3 HR, 6 RBI, .875 SLG) and Livan Hernandez (1-0, CG, SHO, 6 SO, 9.0 IP); San Diego's Chase Headley (.480, 12 H); Houston's Chris Johnson (.435, 10 H, .435 OBP, 4 R), Bud Norris (0-1, 0.69 ERA, 14 SO, 13.0 IP) and Wandy Rodriguez (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 SO, 12.0 IP); Philadelphia's Shane Victorino (.419, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 13 H, 6 R, .774 SLG); and Milwaukee's Rickie Weeks (.344, 11 H, 2 HR) and Randy Wolf (1-0, 1.29 ERA, 10 SO, 14.0 IP).
