Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla has been voted the Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month for August. Budweiser, the official beer sponsor of Major League Baseball and sponsor for 24 of 30 MLB clubs, is also the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Month Awards.
In 26 games during the month of August, Uggla was tied for the Major League lead and tops among all National Leaguers with 10 home runs while his 21 RBI were tied for sixth in the N.L. Uggla's 33 hits tied for ninth among N.L. players while his .340 (33-for-97) batting average was good for eighth in the league. The University of Memphis product also ranked among league leaders with a .670 slugging percentage (4th) and a .405 on-base percentage (10th). Uggla began the month of August by extending his career-high hitting streak to 33 games before having it snapped on August 14th against the Chicago Cubs. The streak was the longest by a Braves player since the franchise moved to Atlanta in 1966 and the second-longest in franchise history behind Tommy Holmes' 37-game streak in 1945. During the streak, Uggla batted .377 (49-for-130) with 15 home runs, 32 RBI, a .438 on-base percentage and a .726 slugging percentage (July 5th - August 13th). The 31-year-old veteran, who currently leads all Major League second baseman with 186 home runs since 2006, clubbed his 30th home run of the season on August 22nd in a 3-0 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, marking his fifth 30-home run season, a Major League record for second basemen. Only four other second basemen in Major League history have had as many as three 30-homer seasons: Rogers Hornsby, Jeff Kent, Alfonso Soriano and Chase Utley. After hitting just .185 with 15 homers and 34 RBI before the All-Star break, Uggla has hit .337 with 17 home runs and 36 RBI since, improving his season average over 50 points (currently, .237). This is his first career monthly award.
