Politicians make friendly wager

NEW YORK -- An LCS berth is the meat and potatoes of what's at stake between the Yankees and Twins this week. The icing on the cake would be, well, dessert.

A friendly wager between two House representatives puts local delicacies on the line depending on who advances. It's the latest in a tradition of competition between legislators whose local teams have championship dreams.

Congressman Martin Olav Sabo (D-Minnesota) and Jose E. Serrano (D-New York) are confident enough in their respective clubs that they've offered each other a heaping helping of dining heritage should their teams lose.

Congressman Sabo, who represents Minneapolis, has put up a variety of Norwegian desserts. That includes krumcake (cookies), fyrestekake (cardamom shortbread cake) and kransekake (almond wreath cakes).

For Congressman Serrano, whose district includes Yankee Stadium, the offering is a basket of food from Mike's Deli in Little Italy in the Bronx.

"With the best record in the American League, the Bronx Bombers are the team to beat," Congressman Serrano said, "and the Twins are just a mere hiccup on the way toward another exciting Yankees victory over the Bambino-cursed Red Sox in the next round. I can taste those Norwegian desserts already."

Congressman Sabo, meanwhile, sounded like he had a pregame tailgate planned for the ALCS next week.

"This is the third year in a row that the Twins have advanced to the Division Series, and I'm confident that, as they say, the third time's a charm," he said. "I look forward to the Italian sausage at the celebration party once the Twins win the series."

He's not just an avid Twins fan, but qualifies as a Washington baseball veteran. He has played in or managed the Democrats' team in the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity for the past 25 years.
