Yankees Welcome United States Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to Throw Out Ceremonial First Pitch as Part of Hispanic Heritage Month09/22/2009 12:04 PM ET
The New York Yankees will hold two special ceremonial first pitches during the team's final regular season homestand to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. United States Supreme Court Justice - and Bronx native - Sonia Sotomayor will throw out the game's first pitch on Saturday, September 26, prior to the Yankees' 4:10 p.m. game vs. the Red Sox. Panama President Ricardo Martinelli will do the honor the night before, on Friday, September 25, prior to the Yankees' 7:05 p.m. game vs. Red Sox.
On Monday, September 28, the Yankees will conclude their Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations with the on-field presentation of the Yankees' Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Community Achievement Awards prior to the Yankees' 7:05 p.m. game vs. the Royals.
"Having Justice Sotomayor, a South Bronx native, participate in our yearly Hispanic Heritage Month celebration is very exciting, as she is an inspiration to so many," said Manuel García, Yankees Director of Latino Affairs. "We are proud to welcome her and President Martinelli to our new home."
The Yankees are proud to once again take part in special events during September to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. On September 11, the Latino Sports Writers and Broadcasters Association held their annual awards luncheon in the Yankee Stadium Banquet and Conference Center, and honored Alex Rodriguez. The next day, latinobaseball.com held their annual award presentation during a pregame ceremony, naming Robinson Cano their 2009 MVP. That same evening, Grammy Award-winning artist John Secada sang the national anthem, prior to the Yankees-Orioles game.
Also in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the September issue of Yankees Magazine, the club's official game program, contains an 11-page feature article, titled "The Origin of the Game," which traces the development of the game of baseball in Latin America. Additionally, fans who follow the club on its Spanish-language Web site, www.yankeesbeisbol.com, can check out the special Hispanic Heritage Month section and participate in an online sweepstakes where they have the opportunity to win tickets to the final regular season home game at Yankee Stadium on September 30 vs. Kansas City.
