ARLINGTON -- He is the only Rangers infielder not selected to the All-Star Game this year, but the accolades keep coming for first baseman Mark Teixeira. On Monday, Teixeira was named named the American League Player of the Month for July. Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana was named Pitcher of the Month for July.
Tex, as he is known in the Lone Star State, put on a hitting clinic in July. He tied for the Major League lead in home runs with 13, RBIs with 30 and runs scored with 27. He also hit .300 with six doubles and leads the AL in home run ratio with one every 12.8 at-bats.Equally impressive was his .379 on-base percentage and a .750 slugging percentage. Teixeira also secured a piece of history in the month. His 13 homers marked the fourth highest monthly total in Rangers franchise history and he became the fourth youngest switch-hitter ever to reach 50 career home runs during his tremendous month. Also during July, Teixeira hit a home run in five consecutive games from July 11-19, matching the club record also accomplished by Carl Everett and Alex Rodriguez in 2003, and became just the fourth switch-hitter in Major League history with a home run in at least five consecutive games played. The eventful month also featured home runs from the both sides of the plate for the first time in his career; he accomplished the feat on July 4 against Houston. His second home run that day was one a grand slam, one of two grand slams he hit in July. The monthly award is the first such award for Teixeira, but he was also named Player of the Week during July. He is the first Texas player other than Rodriguez to win the montly award since 1999. As for Santana, he was 3-2 with a 1.17 ERA in his six July starts, holding opponents to a .095 average.
