John Mabry, still versatile after all these years

Nothing if not versatile, John Mabry played six different positions during his 14-year big league career and contributed to Cardinals playoff teams in 1996, 2004 and 2005. He's also known as the player traded for Jeremy Giambi in "Moneyball" and as Shaq's hitting coach on Shaq Vs.

After working as an analyst on Cards broadcasts last year, the Delaware native moved into the dugout as St. Louis' assistant hitting coach this season. Beyond helping hitters fine-tune swings and overcome slumps, Mabry often takes a shift throwing pregame batting practice.

That gig is hardly a stretch, as Mabry twice pitched in relief during blowout losses -- once for the Mariners in 2000 and again for the Marlins in '01. He allowed seven earned runs over one combined inning for a lifetime 67.00 ERA.
