For the Bucs' sake, let's hope Greg Schiano's first NFL season goes a bit better than his first pitch at Tropicana Field on Friday night.
Scouts behind home plate said the toss registered in the mid-90s as it sailed a good eight feet over Joe Maddon's glove and to the backstop.
"Should have got up on the mound I guess," said Schiano, laughing off the moment on his way to his seat. "Too much strength. Got to get out of the weight room."
Schiano, named the ninth head coach in Buccaneers history this January, is a product of Bucknell University, rival of Maddon's alma matter, Lafayette College. But the two set their differences aside, exchanging a hug at home plate. Still, Schiano snuck in a parting jab.
"I said, [Skipper], you've got to get out of your crouch!"
