Marlins In-Game Fish Race

Tuesday, April 30, 2013 10:36 AM

I love in-game promotions. A few days ago I covered the San Diego Padres' highly-entertaining squirrel race and just yesterday I witnessed the Miami Marlins fish race, which is called "The Great Sea Race." The race occurs in the middle of the sixth inning and features four fish characters who run from the outfield to third base, including Bob the Shark, Julio the Octopus, Spike the Sea Dragon and Angel the Stone Crab. Yesterday's winner was Angel. The Marlins themselves also pulled off an impressive late-inning win.

I've since learned about many other ballpark races: PNC Park has a race featuring a jalapeno, a sauerkraut, a cheese and an onion; Miller Park has a sausage race; Arizona has a 'legends race.' And I'm sure there are others. As such, I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the next race to air.
