2014 may go down as the Year of the Position Player Pitcher. Texas Rangers C/1B J.P. Arencibia became the latest position player to toe the rubber last night, tossing a scoreless inning in a blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Relying exclusively on a low-70s fastball/dropball(?), Arencibia only allowed one hit in the frame. He had a good sense of humor about the appearance, and his stuff, after the game.
Those were not knuckle balls just super slow gravity pitches... At 73 mph they have to drop.. #ThatWasFun- jp arencibia (@jparencibia9) August 14, 2014
Arencibia is the third Rangers position player to pitch this season, joining the flame-throwing Mitch Moreland and Chris Gimenez. Slugger Adam Dunn was the last position player to pitch, and his appearance was a beautiful thing.
