chn 05/23/09 2:20 AM ET Sandy Burgin is a contributor to]]> Peavy, who vetoed a trade to the White Sox on Thursday, pitched and batted the San Diego Padres to their seventh straight victory, a 4-0 win over Carlos Zambrano and the Chicago Cubs Friday night at PETCO Park.

The loss was a season-high fifth in a row for the Cubs.

Peavy (4-5) allowed just two hits over six innings. He struck out 10 and walked four and hit a batter. He also contributed a single and scored a run. The Padres ace extended his franchise record of 10-plus strikeout games to 30.

"I started to count those [strikeouts] up there and halfway through, I quit," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella, who saw his team strike out 16 times in addition to stranding 13 runners.

"Peavy's a good pitcher, obviously," said Piniella. "Had the White Sox got him, he wouldn't have pitched tonight. But we would have faced him a couple of times in Chicago in the Interleague series, so we might be done with it.

"He's a good pitcher, there's no question, but we haven't been swinging the bats ... and we'll leave it at that. We're in a rough spell, and against Peavy, that helps to exacerbate things even more."

Zambrano, who was returning off the DL following a left hamstring strain, struggled early on in the first inning, but recovered and pitched well into the fifth inning.

The Cubs ace, now 3-2, allowed three runs on three hits. He walked four and hit a batter and also struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings. He threw 97 pitches with 31 coming in the first inning.

"Zambrano threw a lot of pitches in that first inning and he got almost five innings of work in," said Piniella. "His command was really off early, but he settled down and pitched well. He wanted to finish the fifth, but he had already thrown 97 pitches, which was more than we wanted, and we got him out of there. But he'll be sharper the next time out."

Zambrano walked Tony Gwynn Jr. and hit David Eckstein, the first two batters in the first inning. After striking out Adrian Gonzalez, Zambrano walked Scott Hairston, loading the bases. Brian Giles followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center.

"The first inning, I was too rushed," said Zambrano. "After that, I was able to settle back and pitch my game. It's been three weeks since I've pitched in the big leagues, and some of the pitches were close. My arm slot in that first inning was down, and every time I do that, my balls stay flat.

"After that first inning, I pitched my game," said Zambrano. "I was feeling good today. My arm was feeling good, but that was just a little problem with the arm slot."

In the second inning Peavy hit Cubs leadoff batter Bobby Scales that led to home plate umpire Dana DeMuth warning both benches.

It was Peavy that started Zambrano's demise in the fifth. The Padres pitcher blooped a single to center leading off and moved over to third when Gwynn lined a double down the right-field line.

Edgar Gonzalez, who had come on to relieve Eckstein, who left with a chest contusion after the first inning, hit a sacrifice fly to left as Peavy beat Alfonso Soriano's throw home.

After an intentional walk to Adrian Gonzalez, Zambrano retired Hairston on an infield popup for the second out. He then exited the game.

Aaron Heilman came on and gave up a single to Giles as Gwynn came home with the third run of the game.

Adrian Gonzalez added his 16th home run, a solo shot off Cubs reliever Neal Cotts leading off the seventh.

The Cubs did threaten in the ninth, loading the bases after two were out on singles by Soriano and Ryan Theriot along with a walk to Kosuke Fukodome.

However, Heath Bell came on and got Derek Lee to pop out to Adrian Gonzalez in foul territory to end the game as he picked up his 12th save in 13 opportunities.]]> 00:00:48 00:02:06 00:00:24 rtsp:// /news/gameday_recap.jsp?ymd=20090522&content_id=4886296&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd /news/article.jsp?ymd=20090522&content_id=4892314&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd /news/article.jsp?ymd=20090522&content_id=4886802&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd /gen/xml/articles/2009/05/22/4886276.jsp /news/article.jsp?ymd=20090522&content_id=4886552&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
