The Latin American Home of the Astros

The Astros Dominican Summer League team completed their 2011 season on August 20. The academy will host an Instructional League program beginning October 1st with the Instructional League season beginning on November 1st and ending in mid December. During instructional league, the team will play four games a week against other instructional clubs.

At the beginning of 2012, players will return to the academy to prepare for the 2012 season.

Some 2011 Dominican Summer League highlights:
  • OF Teoscar Hernandez was named team MVP after hitting .274 with 7 HR and 35 RBI
  • LHP Reymin Guduan finished the season with a 2.17 ERA in 13 starts with a 1-3 record.
  • IF Jose Solano hit .282 (67x238) with 21 RBI and 21 stolen bases.
  • Juan Santana was selected as a Dominican League All-Star and finished the season batting .274 with 3 HR and 28 RBI.
  • In addition to the above players, other top prospects include LHP Ambiorix De Leon and OF Frederick Serrano.
History

The Astros have had a presence in the Dominican Republic since 1985 when the club operated out of the Estrellas Winter League Stadium in San Pedro de Macoris. From 1987-2009, the Astros home in the Dominican Republic was at Ingenio Santa Fe where numerous future Major Leaguers played including current Astros player Wandy Rodriguez. The Astros held the grand opening of the new Latin American Home of the Houston Astros in Guerra, Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on May 10, 2010.
