Fred Nelson Director of Professional Scouting

Fred Nelson enters his 22nd season in the Astros organization and his first as the club's director of professional scouting. He was previously the club's coordinator of professional scouting. During his tenure with the Astros, Fred has served in a variety or roles, including as the club's director of minor league operations, special assistant to the general manager, Major League and professional scout, and also as an advance scout (2000-04). Fred previously served as assistant director of player development with the Chicago White Sox in 1985 before moving to Houston. He also managed three seasons at Niagara Falls in the New York-Penn League from 1982-84. A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Fred earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Arizona State University, where he was an All-American infielder and a member of the 1967 national championship team. He was inducted into the Arizona State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Following his playing career at Arizona State, Fred was drafted by the Dodgers and played three years in their organization. He returned to his alma mater in 1972 as an assistant coach, and was named head coach at Missouri-St. Louis in 1973. He also served as the head baseball coach and assistant athletic director at Scottsdale (AZ) Community College from 1974-84. Fred makes his offseason home in Sugarland, Texas, with his wife, Carolyn. They have four children: sons, Troy, Scott, Eric, and daughter Alex.
