Baker was part of a Marlins contingent that traveled to Haiti to see firsthand the destitute living conditions of families in Port-au-Prince, as well as in Cap-Haitien, where some of those fleeing the earthquake ravaged capital have moved. John served as a spokesperson for the Marlins Homes for Haiti campaign, which is raising funds to build a 25 home village in Haiti.
"The trip to Haiti was an eye-opening experience; it was an awakening for me," Baker said. "Most people don't think of this kind of poverty being just an hour and a half by plane from Florida. Looking at pictures doesn't do it justice. Until you have walked where they walk, and smelled what they smell, you really cannot understand."

Baker was part of a Marlins contingent that traveled to Kuwait and Iraq on the first ever MLB trip to visit the troops in the war region of Iraq. During the 8-day trip, they spent time with kids at the Kuwait Little League, signed countless autographs and simply spent time swapping stories with the young men and women of our military.
Upon returning to the States, Baker and Chris Coghlan (who also was on the trip) formed the Marlins Letters to Troops program, which encourages Marlins fans to take time to send letters to members of the Florida National Guard currently serving overseas. Every home stand four soldiers were selected and fans could visit the Letters to the Troops booth in section 149 and personalize letters to these men and women.
John Baker partnered with Chris Coghlan to host a Pros vs. GI Joes event at the Sun Life Stadium. Via Xbox Live, Marlins 'Pros' at the stadium and 'GI Joes' stationed around the world battled each other in Call of Duty and Guitar Hero. In addition, troops from the Homestead Air Force Base were on hand to mingle and play the games too.
