The Reds had driven Cuellar from Game 2 in the third inning, although Baltimore came back to win the game, and had him on the ropes again in the first inning of Game 5. A two-out single by Johnny Bench, followed by back-to-back doubles by Lee May and Hal McRae, plated three runs before Cuellar retired Tommy Helms to escape the inning.
But the Orioles responded with two runs in each of the next three innings to knock surprise starter Jim Merritt from the game, and ran the lead to 7-2 by fifth inning. Home runs by Frank Robinson and Merv Rettenmund highlighted what would ultimately end as a 15-hit, nine-run onslaught against Merritt and five Reds relievers. Every Baltimore position player notched at least one hit and all but Brooks Robinson either scored or drove in a run.
Although Robinson was quiet with the bat, he made two dramatic statements with his glove as the Orioles took control of the game. Robinson's otherworldly defense at third had given the Reds' right-handed hitters fits throughout the series, and two more gems in Game 5 capped his one-man highlight reel.
In the top of the fourth, Robinson made a lunging backhanded stop and flipped to first baseman Boog Powell to retire May. Robinson's signature move then followed in the ninth, with the championship just three outs away, as he dove into foul ground to snare Bench's line drive, which had seemed destined for extra-bases.
While the Orioles bats and gloves dominated the game, Cuellar settled down after his rocky first inning, holding Cincinnati to a walk and a pair of harmless singles over the final eight innings. With the series win, the Orioles were able to amend for their humbling defeat the hands of the New York Mets in the 1969 World Series and take their second title in five seasons.
