"Carlton Fisk Game" Sends SuperSeries to Seven

FENWAY PARK, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- You've seen it again and again, and still you are hard pressed to change the channel every time it graces your screen. The image of Carlton Fisk watching his ball soar into the Boston night, urging it from afar to pass inside the foul pole atop the Green Monster, and finally leaping with ecstasy when his homer stays fair continues to provide goose bumps for baseball fans worthy of the designation.

But the historic blast that kept the dream of a World Series Championship alive for the Red Sox was only the signature memory in what was a game filled with dramatic moments.

With the Reds holding a three-games-to-two lead, three days of rain pushed back Game 6, allowing the Sox to start their ace right-hander, Luis Tiant. Boston jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on a home run by rookie Fred Lynn in the first, but watched as the Reds tied it up in the fifth, then tacked on three more runs in the top of the eighth to lead 6-3.

In the bottom of the inning, Bernie Carbo came to the rescue with his second pinch-hit home run of the series, a three-run shot that tied the game. In the ninth, the Red Sox had a golden opportunity to score, but George Foster kept the Reds alive by nailing a daring Denny Doyle at the plate, sending the game into extra innings.

It wasn't until the bottom of the 12th that Fisk pulled Reds pitcher Pat Darcy's name into the history books, preserving Boston's opportunity to seek baseball's highest honor for one more game.
