Rick Monday's ninth inning blast stuns the Expos |

OLYMPIC STADIUM, MONTREAL, QUEBEC -- Needing only three outs and one run to earn the first World Series appearance in their franchise history, the Montreal Expos instead had to watch in stunned disbelief as Rick Monday and the Dodgers took the National League Pennant with a dramatic ninth-inning home run.

With the series tied at two games apiece after four tightly contested games, the Expos got onto the scoreboard first, as rookie leadoff man Tim Raines scored after starting the inning with a double. Expos starter Ray Burris, who crafted a shutout in Game 2, made the lead stand into the fifth inning before giving up his first run of the series, with Monday scoring on a groundout by Dodgers starter Fernando Valenzuela.
Neither team was otherwise able to mount much of an offensive threat, which was typical of the series in which the two teams combined to hit a paltry .224, while the pitchers rolled to a cumulative ERA of 2.35. In keeping with that trend, the 1-1 tie stood into the ninth inning.
Expos ace Steve Rogers relieved Burris to start the ninth inning and quickly retired Steve Garvey to start the inning. Ron Cey flew out to the warning track in left field for the second out, but Monday suddenly broke the tie, crushing Rogers' 3-1 fastball over the center field wall, shocking the Expos and giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead going to the bottom of the ninth.
Valenzuela, who would later be named the NL Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award winner, got the first two outs in the bottom of the inning before tiring and walking Gary Carter and Larry Parrish. With the tying run on second base in the person of pinch-runner Jerry Manual, Valenzuela gave way to Bob Welch, who got Jerry White to end the game and send the Dodgers to the World Series, which they would win in six games over the New York Yankees.
