FULTON COUNTY STADIUM, ATLANTA, GEORGIA -- For the second straight year, the Atlanta Braves found themselves in the midst of a chillingly close World Series, with four of the six games coming down to a single run. This time, they faced the Toronto Blue Jays, who entered Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium one win away from bringing Canada its first ever World Series crown.
Starters: David Cone vs. Steve Avery
WP: Jimmy Key LP: Charlie Leibrandt
HR: TOR: Candy Maldonado (4th)

Toronto scored a run in the first on a double by Joe Carter off Atlanta starter Steve Avery. The Braves answered against Blue Jays starter David Cone in the third when Deion Sanders (who batted .533 for the Series) doubled and scored on a Terry Pendleton single. Toronto regained the lead on Candy Maldonado's solo homer in the fourth.
The score remained 2-1 in the ninth when Toronto brought fireballing closer Tom Henke to the mound. With one out, NLCS hero Francisco Cabrera came to the plate and lined a ball to left that nearly did it again. But Maldonado, who initially misjudged the ball, made a leaping catch to preserve the lead.
Now there were two out in the bottom of the ninth and the World Series on the line when slap-hitting Otis Nixon took his spot in the batter's box. Down 0-2 in the count, Nixon hit a single to left that scored Jeff Blauser with the tying run.
With the score still tied in the 11th, Dave Winfield came to the plate with two on and two out. Eleven years earlier, Winfield went 1-for-22 as a Yankee in his only other World Series appearance, a four-games-to-two loss to the Dodgers. Now at age 41, Winfield was looking to redeem that stain on his Hall of Fame resume. But it would have to come at the expense of pitcher Charlie Leibrandt, who was looking for some redemption of his own. The previous year, Leibrandt was also handed the ball with the game tied in extra innings of Game 6, and he promptly surrendered a game-winning home run to Kirby Puckett. This time, it was Winfield's turn to be the hero, as his two-run double down the third-base line put the Jays up 4-2.
The Braves, however, refused to die, mounting another furious comeback in the bottom half. They scored one run to make it 4-3 and, with the tying run on third and two out, ninth-inning hero Nixon came back up to the plate. Only this time, pitcher Mike Timlin fielded Nixon's bunt attempt and gunned over to first for Toronto's first ever World Series title.
