Game 3 starters show up in relief; Edgar's 11th-inning double wins it

THE KINGDOME, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON -- By all rights, the Seattle Mariners should not have even made it to the postseason. As late as August 20, they trailed the California Angels by 12 1/2 games in the AL West. But the end of the regular season found the two teams tied, and only their victory in a one-game showdown allowed the Mariners to squeak into the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

After dropping the first two games, however -- including a tension-filled, 15-inning classic in the Bronx -- it didn't look as if Seattle's stay would last too long.

But Randy Johnson kept them alive in Game 3, and Edgar Martinez, dubbed "Senor Octobre" for his outrageous performance throughout his first trip to the postseason, propelled them into a fifth game with a game-winning grand slam off closer John Wetteland in Game 4.

In the deciding game, the Yankees staked David Cone to a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth when Ken Griffey Jr. belted a solo homer -- his fifth of the series -- off Cone to start the inning. Cone then walked in the game-tying run with the bases loaded before being removed for rookie fireballer Mariano Rivera, who struck out Mike Blowers to keep the game tied.

Taking no chances, Seattle manager Lou Piniella sent in Johnson on one day's rest in the ninth. The Yankees' Buck Showalter countered in the bottom of the inning with his Game 3 starter as well, Jack McDowell. The score remained tied until the top of the 11th, when the Yanks took a 5-4 lead on a Randy Velarde single.

The Mariners responded by putting runners on the corners for Martinez, whose .571 series average not only overshadowed Junior's five homers, but helped spoil the series for Yankee great Don Mattingly, who batted .417 with six RBIs in his lone career postseason appearance. Martinez smoked a double off McDowell into the corner, scoring Joey Cora and Griffey, and sending the Mariners to their first ever League Championship Series.
