Focus Area
Comments
Hitting Ability:Cowgill has hit, and hit with wood, consistently.
Power:He's put up good power numbers this season, but he doesn't project to hit for much power as a pro.
Running Speed:He is a decent and instinctive runner.
Base running:While speed isn't a plus tool, he uses instincts to steal some bases.
Arm Strength:His arm is adequate to average.
Fielding:He doesn't have off-the-charts tools, but he's a good instinctive center fielder.
Range:He gets good breaks and works hard on it during pre-game.
Physical Description:Cowgill is a compact, strong and fairly athletic infielder.
Medical Update:He missed the 2007 season because of hamate surgery, but has been 100 percent this season.
Strengths:Good hitting approach, excellent instincts on the field.
Weaknesses:None of his tools grade out as anything special.
Summary:Cowgill is one of those college outfielders whose performance surpasses how his tools grade out. He's got a good hitting approach, but scouts don't expect him to hit for power in the future. He most likely profiles best as a fourth-outfielder type, the kind of guy who could fill in every day in center, but wouldn't be seen as a long-term solution. After turning down the A's (29th round) last year, he's certainly improved his Draft status this year.
