Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Gray threw his fastball in the low 90s and touched 93 mph. It was hittable when he left it up in the zone.
Fastball movement:It wasn't completely straight; there was a little movement.
Curve:He showed a good breaking ball that was plus at times.
Slider:It really blends in with the curve to make one pitch. It's a power curve when he's throwing it right.
Changeup:He rarely showed a changeup in this outing.
Control:He was around the plate with all of his stuff.
Poise:He was a good competitor on the mound.
Physical Description:Gray is a good, but undersized athletic right-hander.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:He's got a quick arm with good command and two decent offerings he can throw for strikes.
Weaknesses:Mostly his size. High school right-handers who are small always have to prove themselves more.
Summary:Those who saw Gray over the summer -- and liked him -- saw more or less the same pitcher near the start of his high school season. He'll have to make believers out of those who shy away from undersized righties, but Gray's fastball and breaking ball -- and his command of those two pitches -- might be very persuasive.
