Focus Area
Fastball:Guilmet is inconsistent with his fastball velocity, getting as high as 91 and as low as 84. He's usually in the 87-88 mph range.
Fastball movement:It's a darting fastball with a little tail.
Slider:It's hard and from a high overhand slot, it has a curve action.
Changeup:It's an above-average pitch.
Splitter:He throws an above-average split that goes straight down in the opposite direction of the curve.
Control:He commands all of his pitches and has had extremely good K/BB ratios.
Poise:He's got well above-average mound presence and poise.
Physical Description:He's a decent-sized guy with a funky delivery.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:He has three above-average secondary pitches and commands all of his offerings well. His unique delivery offers plenty of deception to hitters.
Weaknesses:That delivery will scare some off as some feel it will be difficult for him to repeat it over 200 innings every season.
Summary:Pitchers who simply produce in college often get overlooked early, but invariably get drafted, particularly by some teams who value that kind of performance. Guilmet won't light up a radar gun, but he's got three outstanding secondary pitches and excellent command. He's come down to earth a little bit from last year's Pac 10 Pitcher of the Year performance, but he's still a strike thrower with an unorthodox and deceptive delivery. That delivery has some thinking he's a middle reliever or swingman in the future, but there's no question he knows how to pitch.
